Has the 12-volt battery in your BMW or MINI been replaced? On many vehicles, the battery replacement must then be registered in the energy-management system. Bimmerfit checks free of charge before purchase whether the battery and vehicle fit this €39 service and performs the registration remotely.
Detailed explanation: The BMW and MINI battery-registration guide explains when registration is sufficient and when an additional coding check is required.
Registration or coding: what is the difference?
When a new battery uses the same approved technology and capacity, the battery replacement is normally registered. This tells the vehicle that a new battery has been installed. The ageing and charging history of the previous battery should not simply continue to be treated as the condition of the new battery.
If, for example, a conventional lead-acid battery is replaced with AGM or a different capacity is installed, we first need to check whether the requested combination is intended for the vehicle and can be coded. Only then is the replacement registered. Not every battery capacity or technology is technically suitable for every vehicle.
What is included in the remote service?
- pre-check of the model, series, year and installed 12-volt battery
- reading the currently configured battery type and capacity where supported by the vehicle
- registration of the battery replacement using the intended vehicle diagnostic procedure
- check of the registration result and relevant energy-management faults
The service does not include changing the battery type or capacity, installation or removal, the sale of a battery, or a physical load or capacity test. Registration cannot repair an existing parasitic drain, defective intelligent battery sensor, alternator fault or damaged electrical system.
Which vehicles is this service for?
The service may be suitable for many BMW E, F and G Series vehicles and selected MINI R and F Series vehicles with a 12-volt energy-management system that requires registration. Model series and year alone are not sufficient for confirmation. Before the appointment, we check diagnostic access, the battery system, installed technology and the configuration values supported by the vehicle.
This product concerns only the normal 12-volt starter or vehicle electrical-system battery. High-voltage batteries in electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles, 48-volt mild-hybrid systems and special 12-volt lithium systems are not included. Separate inspection and repair services apply to the M-vehicle lithium batteries already offered by Bimmerfit.
What you need before the appointment
- the last seven characters of the VIN, model and year
- a clear photo of the label on the newly installed battery
- battery technology, capacity in Ah and, where possible, the part number
- details of the previous battery where available
- a Windows laptop with power supply and a stable internet connection
- the ENET or K+DCAN cable confirmed through our cable pre-check
The new battery must be installed professionally and connected safely before the remote appointment. Work on electrical components should be completed by a qualified person in accordance with the vehicle-specific repair instructions.
How battery registration works
- You send the vehicle details and a photo of the battery label via WhatsApp.
- We check whether the €39 registration service fits the vehicle and new battery.
- After confirmation, order the service. You can optionally select a preferred appointment at purchase or arrange it with us afterwards.
- At the appointment, we test the diagnostic connection and read the relevant vehicle status.
- We register the battery replacement and verify the result.
For a technically straightforward standard case, allow approximately 20 to 45 minutes. Diagnostic faults, an unstable connection or a different vehicle configuration may require more time or a separate assessment.
When should diagnosis come first?
If the new battery discharges again, the vehicle has starting problems, energy-management warnings return or several control units store low-voltage faults, the underlying cause should be investigated. Registration alone cannot repair parasitic current draw and does not replace battery, charging-system or electrical-system diagnosis. A BMW and MINI remote diagnosis should be the first step in that case.
Frequently asked questions
Does every new BMW battery need to be registered?
Not every older vehicle uses the same diagnostic procedure. Registration after replacement is intended for many BMW and MINI vehicles with intelligent energy management. We check the specific vehicle first.
Is registration sufficient when the capacity changes?
Not necessarily. If the technology or capacity changes, this €39 registration service is not automatically suitable. We check the case before purchase and explain the correct next step.
Can I change from lead-acid to AGM?
Only where the battery, installation and vehicle configuration are technically compatible. Coding cannot make an unsuitable battery suitable. Send us the details of the old and new battery first.
Is a 48-volt or high-voltage battery included?
No. This product applies only to the confirmed 12-volt starter or vehicle electrical-system battery. 48-volt and high-voltage systems require their own manufacturer procedures and are excluded.
Will registration repair a battery that repeatedly discharges?
No. Repeated discharge can be caused by parasitic current draw, charging problems, sensors, wiring or a defective control unit. Diagnosis is required first.
Free check before purchase: Send the last seven characters of the VIN and photos of the new battery label and, where available, the previous battery via WhatsApp. We will then confirm the service option, cable and appointment requirements.
