Have a towbar and vehicle-specific wiring kit been fully installed in your BMW or MINI, but PDC or trailer detection still does not work as intended? On many vehicles, the retrofit must also be added to the vehicle order and coded in the involved control units.

This service starts after the mechanical and electrical installation has been completed. Bimmerfit checks the VIN, trailer module and retrofit kit and performs the supported coding remotely. The towbar, wiring kit, installation and any legally required inspection are not included.

What does BMW option 3AC mean?

BMW uses 3AC as the equipment code for a towbar. Simply adding a code is not the complete job on every vehicle. Control units, software, trailer module, PDC, lamp monitoring, reversing camera and existing driver-assistance systems vary with the model series and equipment.

With an OEM-style retrofit, a suitable diagnostic-capable trailer module is integrated into the vehicle communication system through a vehicle-specific wiring kit. A universal wiring kit without corresponding communication may operate the trailer lights, but it cannot automatically be coded like factory option 3AC.

When does this service fit?

  • The towbar and vehicle-specific wiring kit are fully installed.
  • A compatible trailer module is connected and accessible through diagnostics.
  • The socket, fuses, ground, power supply and data connections have been checked professionally.
  • The installed hardware is demonstrably suitable for the vehicle and production period.
  • The retrofit still needs to be added to the vehicle order or the involved control units still require coding.

Suitable BMW E, F and G Series vehicles and selected MINI configurations such as Countryman or Clubman may be supported after an individual check. Whether a specific MINI is approved for towing and which hardware fits cannot be determined from the model name or year alone.

For the Countryman F60, our guide Coding a MINI towbar also explains why 3AC, 235 and the 3AR rear-carrier preparation must not be confused.

The detailed towbar coding guide explains option 3AC, universal and vehicle-specific wiring kits and the difference between a coding issue and an electrical fault.

Included in the price

  • check of the VIN, vehicle equipment, trailer module and installation kit
  • comparison of part numbers and the documented installation status
  • reading the relevant control units and stored faults
  • adding the intended equipment to the vehicle order where technically suitable
  • coding the involved compatible control units
  • checking the trailer functions available in the vehicle
  • a joint function test within the limits of remote work

Which functions may be covered?

Depending on the model series and existing equipment, trailer detection, PDC behavior, lamp monitoring, reversing-camera display or the behavior of individual assistance functions may be adjusted. BMW documentation shows, for example, that on certain vehicles the rear parking sensors are handled differently while towing and an installed reversing camera may support a dedicated towbar view.

Not every vehicle has all of these functions. Coding cannot add missing sensors and cannot replace an incompatible trailer module. We therefore confirm only the functions intended for the specific vehicle and component combination.

Information required before the appointment

  • the last seven characters of the VIN, model, year and production month
  • manufacturer and product number of the towbar and wiring kit
  • a photo showing the complete part number on the trailer module
  • the installation instructions or wiring diagram for the kit
  • information on whether the kit is new, used or taken from a donor vehicle
  • the current fault: PDC does not change behavior, trailer is not detected, lamp fault or module cannot be reached
  • photos of the socket, fuse allocation and relevant connections where anything is unclear

If the parts have not yet been purchased, have the module and wiring kit checked first. A similar housing or matching connector is not sufficient evidence of compatibility.

Requirements for the remote appointment

  • professionally completed mechanical and electrical installation
  • a suitable wiring kit and diagnostic-capable trailer module
  • a Windows laptop with power supply and stable internet connection
  • the ENET, K+DCAN or other diagnostic cable confirmed after the vehicle check
  • stable vehicle voltage during diagnosis and coding
  • access to the rear of the vehicle and the socket for the subsequent function test

The ENET or K+DCAN guide explains the usual cable choice. Additional information for newer vehicles is available under BMW F Series coding and BMW G Series coding.

How the coding works

  1. You send the VIN, vehicle details, kit manufacturer and trailer-module part number.
  2. We check compatibility, the diagnostic route and any remaining requirements.
  3. After a positive check, we confirm the cable, preparation and appointment.
  4. At the appointment, the vehicle and laptop are connected according to our instructions.
  5. We read the control units, perform the agreed coding and check the accessible functions.

Coding issue or electrical fault?

If the trailer module cannot be reached, missing coding is often not the cause. The power supply, ground, fuses, bus connection, pin assignment and part number must then be checked. If the module does not detect a trailer, the socket, adapter, trailer lighting and wiring kit may also be responsible.

Clearing faults or changing the vehicle order cannot repair a broken wire. Where the initial condition is unclear, a remote diagnosis should be carried out first.

Not included and to be completed locally

  • installation of the towbar, cable routing and electrical connection work
  • repair of faulty sockets, wiring, fuses or control units
  • mechanical inspection, permitted towing capacity, type approval or any legally required inspection
  • load or road tests with a trailer
  • activation of functions not supported by the vehicle or hardware

Whether the towbar may be used on the specific vehicle depends on the vehicle documents, component approval, installation and the regulations that apply at the place of use. Remote coding does not replace these checks.

Frequently asked questions

Why does PDC not change behavior correctly while towing?

Possible causes include missing coding, a trailer module that is not detected, an unsuitable wiring kit or an electrical fault. We first check diagnostic communication and the vehicle configuration.

Can every universal wiring kit be coded?

No. OEM-style integration requires a suitable communication-capable solution. Universal kits often use their own logic outside the vehicle order.

Can a used trailer module be used?

Only after a check. The part number, hardware level, software, previous use and vehicle compatibility must fit.

Are the reversing camera and PDC adjusted automatically?

Only where the vehicle, equipment and retrofit kit support those functions. A general promise is not possible without checking the VIN and components.

Is a TÜV or roadworthiness inspection included?

No. Any legally required inspection, registration and assessment of the mechanical installation must be completed by the responsible inspection body or a qualified local workshop.

Does the service also work for MINI?

A compatible retrofit can be coded on selected MINI vehicles. Vehicle approval, hardware and permitted towing capacity must be assessed individually first.

Have the retrofit checked first: Send the VIN, photos of the part numbers and the installation instructions via WhatsApp. Related post-installation coding services are available under BMW & MINI retrofits.
