Have you retrofitted original or compatible LCI or facelift tail lights to your BMW and now need the corresponding vehicle coding? Bimmerfit checks the vehicle, lights, wiring and initial condition and adapts the supported lighting configuration remotely. Coding is the software part of the retrofit; it does not replace correct installation.

When is tail-light coding useful?

After changing from pre-facelift to LCI tail lights, bulb monitoring, output control or the vehicle order may still match the original equipment. Possible symptoms include fault messages, flickering caused by monitoring pulses, incorrect lighting functions or pin assignments that do not match the vehicle. Before making a change, it is necessary to distinguish whether the cause is coding, wiring, adapters, pin assignment or the light itself.

The service is intended for professionally installed retrofits. Software adaptation cannot repair defective LEDs, damaged connectors, incorrect wiring kits, moisture ingress or incompatible components.

Typical vehicles and conversions

An assessment may be possible for selected BMW 3 Series F30/F31, 4 Series F32/F33/F36, M3 F80, M4 F82/F83, 5 Series G30/G31 and M5 F90 vehicles, among others. This list is not a general compatibility guarantee. Production date, body style, market version, lighting equipment, part numbers and installed wiring kit must match.

Original EU, US and other market versions may differ in wiring and lighting function. Aftermarket facelift-style lights are not automatically codable like original LCI lights. Before purchasing, send photos of the installed lights, visible part numbers and details of the retrofit wiring.

The guide Retrofitting and coding BMW LCI tail lights explains which faults should be checked first. It separates component compatibility, wiring kits, pin assignments, hardware faults and vehicle coding for F30/F31, F32/F36, F80 and G30/G31/F90.

What is included in the remote service?

  • pre-check of the VIN, model series, year and production month
  • review of the installed tail lights and known wiring
  • reading the relevant vehicle configuration and stored faults
  • adaptation of the supported lighting or vehicle configuration
  • joint function test of tail, brake, indicator and reversing lights where fitted
  • personal support during the remote appointment

Installation, repinning, adapters or wiring kits, diagnosis of damaged hardware, repair of a lighting or body control unit and the procurement of approvals or certificates are not included.

What must be completed before the appointment?

  • tail lights fully installed according to a suitable wiring diagram
  • connectors, adapters and wiring checked mechanically
  • a Windows laptop with power supply and stable internet connection
  • a diagnostic cable suitable for the model series; on many F and G models this is an ENET cable
  • stable vehicle voltage and, for longer work, suitable external voltage support

E Series vehicles may require a K+DCAN cable. Our diagnostic cable guide explains the selection. A fixed duration can be estimated only after the vehicle and retrofit have been reviewed because diagnostic and wiring questions can change the process.

How the coding works

  1. You send the last seven characters of the VIN, year, photos of the lights, part numbers and information about the wiring kit.
  2. We check whether the retrofit generally fits this service and which connection cable is required.
  3. At the confirmed appointment, the Windows laptop is connected to the vehicle and internet.
  4. We read the relevant configuration and perform the agreed adaptation, provided no hardware or wiring issue prevents it.
  5. You check all affected lighting functions on the vehicle together with us.

Difference from other retrofits

This product concerns only coding after a tail-light conversion. A separate headlight service is available for facelift headlights. A retrofitted camera is covered by the reversing-camera coding service. Additional conversions must be disclosed before the appointment so the correct service can be planned.

Road approval and lighting functions

The installed lights, adapters and lighting functions must be permitted for the vehicle and intended use. Coding does not automatically make an unapproved or incorrectly installed light legal for road use. The vehicle owner is responsible for component selection, professional installation, required markings and any necessary inspections or registrations.

Frequently asked questions

Will coding remove every fault message?

No. A warning may also be caused by an incorrect pin assignment, defective LEDs, damaged wiring or an incompatible module. Those causes must be repaired first.

Do you also code aftermarket tail lights?

This is assessed using the manufacturer information, part numbers, connection and requested function. Not every aftermarket product supports the same control strategy as an original component.

Are US and EU tail lights identical?

Not necessarily. Market versions may differ in wiring, side-marker, indicator or rear-fog-light functions. The specific combination must be clarified in advance.

Do I still need an inspection after coding?

That depends on the light, markings, vehicle and conversion. Technical coding does not replace any legally required inspection or registration.

Can you complete the installation or wiring remotely?

No. We can review existing documentation and symptoms, but the mechanical installation and wiring must be completed professionally on site.

Have the conversion checked before purchase: Send the VIN, year, photos, part numbers and wiring-kit details via WhatsApp. This helps establish early whether coding is appropriate or a hardware correction is required first.
