Have original or compatible LCI or facelift headlights been professionally retrofitted, but the lighting functions or fault messages still do not match the conversion? This remote service checks the vehicle configuration and codes supported BMW models according to the headlight and control-unit version actually installed.

Coding can adapt the software configuration to a technically complete conversion. It cannot replace missing control units or wiring, professional installation, headlight adjustment or the repair of defective components. We therefore check the vehicle and conversion before the appointment.

When is coding useful after a facelift conversion?

  • retrofitting suitable LCI headlights to a pre-facelift vehicle
  • new lighting functions are not controlled correctly despite correct installation
  • fault messages result from a vehicle configuration that has not yet been adapted
  • suitable lighting modules were replaced or added and must be integrated through software
  • the vehicle order or control-unit coding still corresponds to the previous equipment

What we do during the remote appointment

  • pre-check of the VIN, model series, year, headlight type and installed control units
  • reading relevant vehicle data and stored faults
  • adaptation of the supported vehicle configuration to the documented conversion
  • coding the relevant control units where technically possible
  • final function test of lighting functions that can be checked through software

The required steps depend on the specific conversion. There is no universal coding file for every vehicle. We change only the parameters required for the agreed conversion and document anything that must be corrected locally.

Requirements before coding

  • headlights, lighting modules, wiring kits and adapters are suitable for the vehicle and conversion
  • installation, pin assignment, ground points and power supply have been checked professionally
  • no moisture, damaged connectors or recognizable hardware faults
  • a Windows laptop with a stable internet connection
  • a suitable diagnostic cable: ENET for many F and G Series vehicles, and K+DCAN depending on the system for supported E Series vehicles
  • stable vehicle voltage; suitable voltage support is required for longer work

Before ordering or confirming an appointment, send the VIN, photos or part numbers of the headlights and modules, and a short description of the conversion. For used components, also state whether they have already been programmed or modified.

Compatibility depends on the conversion

LCI and facelift conversions are found on BMW 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 Series vehicles and various M models, among others. The model designation alone does not confirm feasibility. Pre-facelift and LCI vehicles can differ significantly in headlights, control units, wiring and software level.

We confirm the service only where the vehicle and installed components match. If additional hardware, programming at the vehicle or a repair is required, we explain this before coding.

Remote-service process

  1. Send the vehicle details, component information and conversion photos.
  2. After a positive pre-check, order the product. You can optionally select a preferred appointment or arrange it with us after purchase.
  3. Prepare the Windows laptop, suitable cable, internet connection and stable vehicle voltage.
  4. At the confirmed appointment, we connect remotely and check the relevant control units.
  5. Supported adaptations are coded and the accessible functions are checked together.

A typical coding appointment often takes approximately 30 to 60 minutes. Additional diagnosis, incomplete installation or required programming can take longer. The vehicle must not be moved and the connection must not be interrupted during the work.

Not included

  • mechanical installation, wiring or supply of headlights and modules
  • repair of defective LEDs, drivers, control units, wiring or connectors
  • mechanical headlight adjustment, calibration on a test area or roadworthiness inspection
  • approval of non-approved headlights for use on public roads

The lights must be permitted for the intended use, installed correctly and subsequently adjusted or inspected in accordance with the applicable requirements. Remote coding does not replace these tasks.

Frequently asked questions

Can coding remove a fault message despite incorrect wiring?

No. Software cannot repair a missing power supply, incorrect pin assignment or defective hardware. These faults must be corrected locally first.

Is an ENET cable sufficient for every BMW?

No. Many F and G models use ENET, while older E Series vehicles may require K+DCAN depending on the control unit. We confirm the correct connection after checking the vehicle.

Are adaptive lighting functions activated automatically?

Only where the vehicle, headlights, sensors, control units and wiring fully support the function. Mechanical adjustment and any required calibrations must be completed locally.

Is the coding automatically legal for road use?

No. Approval and inspection requirements depend on the components, conversion and country. The customer must clarify this with a workshop, inspection body or responsible authority.

Related retrofits are available under BMW retrofits and coding. Information about cables and the process is available in the ENET or K+DCAN guide and on the BMW Remote Coding page.

The guide Retrofitting BMW LCI headlights: coding and checks explains which components, lighting modules, wiring, coding, adjustment and approval questions should be reviewed before or after the conversion.
