Have you imported a BMW from the United States or Canada and want its language, digital units or navigation assessed and adapted for use in Germany or Europe? Bimmerfit identifies the head unit, software level, market version and vehicle equipment and performs the technically supported changes remotely. Coding can adapt many settings but does not automatically make an imported vehicle identical to a European model in every respect.
What can be changed on a US import?
Depending on the model series and control unit, German menu language, 24-hour time, Celsius, kilometres, litres per 100 kilometres and other digital units can be configured. Radio or navigation region settings may also be part of the order where the installed hardware and data version support them.
Coding does not turn a physical MPH speedometer face into a km/h scale. Digital displays in the instrument cluster or head-up display can be changed only where the vehicle and software provide the relevant unit. A changed radio region also does not guarantee DAB, ConnectedDrive, eCall, satellite radio or other services that depend on hardware or contracts.
Navigation and map data
European navigation requires a compatible head unit, map family, software level, storage capacity and, where applicable, valid activation. Depending on the vehicle, the system may be CIC, NBT, NBT EVO, EntryNav/EntryNav2 or MGU. The visible menu style alone is not sufficient for binding identification; the VIN, current map name and photos of the version screen are useful.
A European map package or required activation is included only where this is expressly confirmed for the selected option after pre-assessment. Proprietary map data and licences are not obtained from unofficial sources. For a simple map update without a wider import conversion, use the separate navigation-map service.
Which vehicles can be assessed?
Assessment is possible for many BMW E, F and G Series vehicles. The product options are based on the model series and infotainment system, such as CIC, NBT/NBT EVO, EntryNav or MGU. Model, year and display size are not enough on their own. Our head-unit guide explains important differences; final identification is made on the specific vehicle.
What is included?
- pre-assessment of the VIN, model series, production date and import market
- identification of the relevant head unit and current data version
- reading the vehicle configuration required for the order
- conversion of the agreed language, units and regional settings
- navigation adaptation only within the confirmed scope of the selected option
- joint final functional check of the changed menu items
Not included are mechanical modifications, speedometer faces, lights, antennas, mobile-network modules, registration documents, technical reports, top-speed changes or permanent availability of market-bound online services.
Requirements for the remote appointment
- Windows laptop with power supply and stable internet connection
- suitable connection cable: K+DCAN/ICOM depending on the E Series vehicle and ENET for many F and G Series models
- suitable external voltage support where programming or map-data transfer is required
- uninterrupted time for the vehicle, laptop and network
The duration depends on whether only coding values are adapted or software and navigation data must also be processed. A fixed duration is therefore given only after pre-assessment.
Approval and technical limits
A software conversion does not replace individual vehicle approval, roadworthiness inspection or required hardware adaptation. Lighting, emissions, noise, speed indication, radio services and other approval points must be assessed independently. The vehicle owner must clarify with the inspection body and registration authority which evidence and modifications are required for the specific imported vehicle.
Frequently asked questions
Will everything be identical to an EU vehicle after coding?
No. Hardware, market contracts and approval characteristics can differ. We change only the technically supported and agreed software settings.
Can the analogue MPH scale be changed to km/h?
No. A printed or mechanical scale may require a suitable physical conversion. Digital units are assessed separately.
Are European maps always included?
Only where the head unit, map family and activation are suitable and the scope has been confirmed in advance. Otherwise, we identify the additional step required.
Will ConnectedDrive work in Europe afterwards?
Not necessarily. Mobile-network hardware, the vehicle contract, market approval and backend assignment cannot be guaranteed through general coding.
Which cable do I need?
This depends on the model series and work. We assign K+DCAN, ICOM or ENET from the VIN and system before the appointment.
More information about units, lighting, navigation, ConnectedDrive and approval limits is available in the guide to European coding for BMW US imports.
