We offer deactivation or removal of the electronic Vmax (top-speed) limit on suitable BMW vehicles. A positive technical pre-assessment and a clarified, permitted intended use are required.
Some BMW F Series vehicles and imported vehicles have an electronic speed limit that depends on the market, engine or equipment. Bimmerfit assesses the vehicle, engine software and, where relevant, transmission software and the stored limit to determine whether a technically suitable remote adaptation is possible.
A top-speed change affects a safety- and approval-relevant operating range. It is not ordinary comfort coding and is performed only after individual assessment of the vehicle, software and intended use. The model or engine alone is not sufficient for confirmation.
Read before ordering: The guide to BMW top-speed limit changes explains requirements, tyres, vehicle condition, costs and possible effects on operating approval and registration.
Which cases can be assessed?
- selected BMW F Series vehicle with a documented electronic speed limit
- US or other imported vehicle with a market-specific limit
- vehicle for export, dynamometer testing or demonstrably permitted use on a closed course
- pre-assessment of whether the limit is stored in a suitable accessible control unit
The model series alone is not sufficient. Engine, engine control unit, software level, transmission configuration and previous power changes affect feasibility. Model-series information is available under BMW F Series coding.
What is checked before confirmation?
- Vehicle identity: VIN, model, production date, engine and market version.
- Software: accessibility and data version of the engine and, where relevant, transmission control unit.
- Initial condition: observed limit, known modifications and existing fault entries.
- Technical condition: tyres, brakes, suspension, cooling and overall condition must be suitable for the intended use.
- Legal position: intended use, required inspection, vehicle documents and insurance must be clarified before use.
A speedometer or GPS reading alone does not prove why a vehicle stops accelerating. Engine output, gearing, aerodynamic drag, temperature, driving conditions or a technical fault can also limit speed.
Tyres, vehicle condition and speed
In Germany, Section 36 of the StVZO requires tyres to be suitable in particular for the load and design top speed. Speed rating, load capacity, condition, pressure and approval must therefore be checked before any high-speed use.
Brakes, suspension, wheel and tyre combination, cooling and drivetrain must also be technically sound and suitable for the intended range. Bimmerfit cannot perform this mechanical assessment remotely and does not certify high-speed suitability.
Operating approval and insurance
Technical changes can affect the vehicle's operating approval. Section 19 of the StVZO addresses, among other cases, modifications where a hazard is to be expected or emissions or noise behaviour deteriorates. Whether an inspection, new operating approval, registration entry or insurance notification is required must be clarified for the specific vehicle with a recognized inspection body and the insurer before the work is carried out.
This information is not legal advice. Outside Germany, the rules of the country of registration and use apply.
Included in the price
- assessment of VIN, model, engine, market version and software level
- reading relevant control units and available limit information
- determining whether a technically suitable target configuration is possible in principle
- documentation of the initial condition
- agreed remote software adaptation where suitability is confirmed and the intended use has been clarified
- static check of fault memory and control-unit communication after the work
Information required
- last seven VIN characters, model, year and production month
- engine, transmission and import country where applicable
- currently observed limit and measurement method
- complete details of power, transmission and suspension changes
- current tyre designation including speed rating
- available diagnostic report or known engine, transmission, DSC or suspension faults
- written confirmation of the legally clarified intended use
Requirements for the remote appointment
- Windows laptop with power supply and stable internet connection
- reliable ENET interface or another diagnostic route confirmed after assessment
- suitable external voltage support for programming or flashing
- technically inspected vehicle without unresolved engine, transmission, DSC or suspension faults
- no driving or engine operation during remote software work unless expressly instructed for diagnosis
Where fault entries are unclear, begin with the BMW remote diagnosis. A top-speed adaptation must not conceal an existing technical fault.
Assessment and adaptation process
- You send vehicle, software, tyre and intended-use information.
- We assess the control units, access route and technical requirements.
- For a road vehicle, required approvals must be clarified before the work.
- At the confirmed appointment, we test the connection and vehicle voltage and document the initial condition.
- The agreed adaptation is carried out only after a positive assessment.
- Communication and fault memory are checked statically afterwards.
A high-speed functional test is not part of the remote appointment. Any required test may be performed only by qualified persons under suitable, controlled and legally permitted conditions.
Not included
- power increase or modification of exhaust, emissions or noise systems
- mechanical upgrading or assessment of tyres, brakes, suspension, drivetrain or cooling
- approval by a registration authority, inspection body or insurer
- driving or high-speed test
- guarantee of a particular achievable top speed
- work on unconfirmed, locked or technically unsuitable control units
Changing an electronic limit does not create additional engine output. Actual top speed depends, among other things, on power, gearing, vehicle condition, tyres, load and environmental conditions.
Frequently asked questions
Is top-speed adaptation possible on every BMW F Series vehicle?
No. The engine, control unit, software level, market version and access must be assessed individually.
Is the change automatically legal on public roads?
No. Operating approval, inspection, registration, tyre approval and insurance can be affected. Legality must be clarified for the specific vehicle before use.
Does it increase engine output?
No. A limit change is not a power increase and does not guarantee a particular top speed.
Can Bimmerfit check whether my tyres are suitable?
We can check the submitted information for obvious inconsistencies. Professional assessment of condition, approval and installation must be performed locally.
Is the top speed tested on the road?
No. The remote appointment includes no high-speed driving. Any required test must be planned separately and carried out professionally under legally permitted conditions.
Can a software update overwrite the change?
Yes. Later vehicle programming or control-unit replacement can alter individual data versions. A new assessment is then required.
Request a feasibility assessment first: Send the VIN, engine, current limit, tyre details, known modifications and intended use via WhatsApp. An adaptation is confirmed only after technical and legal pre-assessment.
